Magazine One world

The assignment

The assignment was to make a cover, opening spread and a follow-up spread for the magazine One world. One world is a magazine that that addresses social problems among young people. We had to choose which kind of topic we want. I choose for social media and its effects on young teenage girls, and what role FOMO plays in this. We had to make everything by ourselves.

Theme Worlds

Before I come to an image for the magazine, I have created different theme worlds. The goal of this: to capture an image of what kind of atmosphere you want to radiate on your image. And by creating four completely different worlds, you can determine which atmosphere your point of view wants to radiate best.

Idea Sketches

The idea sketches are there to come up with an idea of what kind of icon/picture fits best with what you want to radiate. For this I have chosen 5 words that fit the theme; travel, parties, FOMO, social media and put on a mask. With these words I have sketched the images that fit best.

Creating my own images

When I had a bit of an idea of what my magazine would look like, I shot my own photos with a camera and a friend of mine. Then we got to work, and we tried to portray a girl who doesn't know what to do anymore as dramatically as possible. Because of all the effects that social media has on her. In retrospect, it might have been cool if she was screaming.

Free-standing Images

I wanted to create a chaotic effect, because the life of a teenage girl can be chaotic and confusing sometimes. I wanted to express this by adding as many loose illustrations and images to the magazine as possible. I made these illustrations on procreate or with watercolor on paper. I also demolished a mirror and scanned it on a printer. This is to show the effect of someone who is completely broken and ignorant on the inside.

Results

I am very happy with the results. What I want to convey is that the effects of social media can be very negative, but also positive. By using a lot of pastel colors, it is very cheerful when you first look at it. Just like social media, at first it is fun but the further and deeper you dive into it, the darker it becomes. That is why I have used much heavier and more intense images, the longer you look at it the more complicated it becomes.
